Adapt and

Enhance

Working in a design system, while carrying over parts that are well proven enabled a quick development timeframe within cost targets while providing 10X better cohesion into the design system and user experience.

work-time

Simplified

By offloading resource intensive video meetings and breaking out calendars from typically overburdened laptops, the phone is able to do more and act as dashboard for daily work.

Design Objective

  • Facelift a well established segment leader to blend into an updated design system.

  • Efficiently update in a tight budget and timeline to maximize refresh.

  • Improve surfacing to elevate customer visibility of initial quality

  • Improve defects with constant deep dives with mechanical teams.

Problem
A update of a flagship device was needed under a tight timeline and limited budget to better integrate into a larger portfolio.

Task
I was responsible for familiarizing myself with this architype and work through the best plan of attack to result in the best design ROI.

Action
I started by looking at internals and cross functionally negotiating which components can be upgraded or carried over to reduce development time. From there, it was all about surgically targeting areas for development and maximizing impact and upgrading UX.

Result
The device was the first of it’s kind with a new touch based unified Operating System. Sales uptick of 25% was seen in the announcement in the video phone segment. An iF award further cements these winnings.

Change from

Within

Deep reflection into the flaws present in the current phone helped narrow and focus areas of improvement and which components were needed to be carried over to remain within cost and timeline pressures.

Proven components

Acoustics & keypad mechanicals were carried over and fast tracked development, but necessitated careful integration into the new ID.

Inclusivity is paramount

The bezels surrounding the display are intentionally wide, allowing for thumbs to grip without interfering with the touchscreen. A soft rear profile also invites hands to grip and adjust angles

No Stone

Unturned

Business class performance is exuded here and it instills confidence that communications will be easy, reliable, & secure. The screen angles away dramatically from the plane of the keypad to reduce glare and invite touch interaction. The camera is boldly expressed above the display to draw attention to the user-controlled shutter and tilt mechanisms for optimizing the video experience via a metal ring detail. The metallic theme continues over to the interaction bar under display where navigation & voice assistant features are present.

Simplify

Major areas where multiple parts intersect are simplified, benefiting assembly and build quality.

Adapt

Infinitely adjustable hinges on the camera and stand allow it to suit any user, regardless of use case.

Perfect

Major improvements to surfacing implemented to elevate appearance suiting a flagship device.

Toughen

To support a larger device, simple tricks in geometry add rigidity to the stand with no impact to per unit cost.

Initial floating display was seen as too jarring and disjointed from the body and limited branding expression.

Detailing the interactive touch sensitive “home” key

Having the display bend and intersect with the main body unified the two pieces and allowed for Brandmark to breathe

Sweating the

New wider Proportions compared to the existing baseline (right)
